Flying Siddhi:

It seems that lifting off the ground was a siddhi that negated the laws of gravity and ‘common sense.’ I had learned to fly a small plane, but this involved engineering and technology which everyone could accept. But this Kundalini flying required no mechanical apparatus, technology or fuel. Just by willpower, I could fly to far off galaxies and visit there wide awake and see everything as if I were truly there. Was I in my body or was it my spirit leaving the body behind?

Late in 1979, I had gone to the Ashram to speak to the swami about the strange experiences of lifting off the ground that I was having, but he did not really have a clue what I was going through. Unable to help, he asked me to meditate in the lovely tropical garden of the Ashram, but this just increased my lack of grounding as it was luscious and beautiful. I held on to a plumeria tree to keep from spinning away; almost immediately, I was in a wheel-less chariot racing into space and visiting the mountain home of Shiva in Kailash which is in the mountains of Tibet. I saw Shiva and his wife, Parvati, in their palace and they greeted me there with hugs and waves. Then I zoomed back to the Ashram garden, still clasping the tree to stay grounded. What an honor it felt to have seen that, for I knew the pilgrimage to Kailash to see Shiva’s abode gives a release from karma. It was very auspicious. It also made me realize that my body had not left the tree, but ‘I’ had left—my awareness or consciousness had travelled to Tibet.

Even though I had found that my body did not go on these flights, I am sure that my body did actually lift off the ground during my spins in my living room. How else could I have been up there in the 15 ft ceiling looking at the patio door and wondering if I would be thrown through it? How else could it be that my dog and cat upturned their heads to look at me? If my body had been on the ground, would they have looked up at me in the ceiling if it were only my spirit there? I doubt that. According to Ajit Mookerjee, there are many accounts of spiritual beings called “Natha” who fly. “There is abundant evidence that their yogic powers enabled the siddhai-yogis to defy gravity…they attained a buoyancy which reduced their body weight and allowed them to lift themselves in space as they pleased.”21 This was exactly what was happening to me, and others I have known who also shared this same tradition of Kashmir Shaivism as a result of meeting my teacher.

What would another person have seen if he or she had been watching me that day? Carlos Castaneda had the same question of Nestor who had been present when Carlos had jumped off a precipice. Carlos is not sure if he jumped in his body or it was just his dreaming body.
